The bolo tie (aka bola tie or shoestring necktie) is a type of necktie made from a piece of cord or braided leather with decorative metal tips or aglets (aiguillettes) that has a ornamental clasp or slide to secure it. In the U.S. bolo ties are usually worn with western shirts or western style suits. They are most common in the southwestern states and have been a part of the Hopi, Navajo and Zuni silversmithing traditions since the middle of the twentieth century as traditionally the bolo tie slides and tips are made of silver although they can be made of other metals also.

Arizona made the bolo tie the official neckwear in 1971 and New Mexico designated it the official neckwear in 1987 and officially made it so in 2007. Texas also named the “bola tie” their official tie in 2007. In England, bolo ties are known as bootlace ties and were popular in the 1950’s Teddy Boys who wore them with drape suits. They have been fashionable worldwide with various types of clothes throughout different eras and are considered a timeless classic dress item.
