Bald Eagles and Golden Eagles

The Bald and Golden Eagles are greatly revered by all Native American Indian Tribes.  Considered a messanger the native americans believed that their prayers were conveyed to the gods by eagles, however various tribes had different specific.  The tribes of the Pacific Northwest believed eagles were a connection between the powers that created the world and the people.  These powers (eagles) would impart wisdom and act as judges.  Other tribes considered the eagle to be spirits between worlds connecting the living, the dead and the unborn.  Carriers of wisdom, prayers and visions.  Eagle feathers are symbols of respect, honor and wisdom in all Native American tribes.  Chinook Indians used these feathers as an award to prominent members of their community, as a badge of honor to brave and corageous warriors or to heal the sick and injured.  The Cherokee believed that the Golden Eagle would give them victory in war.  The feathers of the eagles were greatly desired and only special members of the tribe were allowed to kill these magnifient birds of prey.

The Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) is the only eagle unique to North America and is our national bird.  Found throughout most of North America, from Alaska and Canada to northern Mexico.  Around half of those birds live in Alaska and combined with those raptors that live in British Columbia the northwest coast of North America is the stronghold for bald eagles. They flourish in these areas in a main part because of the salmon, dead or dying fish is an important food source.  Both male and female adults are dark brown with a white head and tail. However, the female is 25% larger than the male. Large adult females in Alaska may weigh up to 17 pounds and have a wing span of up to 8 feet, although the average female weighs in around 14 pounds with a lesser wing span. The eagle can see four times better than a human with perfect vision.

The Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos)  is found in the desert grasslands and open country of North America, ranging from the western United States and across Canada into Alaska.  They winter from south-central Alaska all the way into Central Mexico and are true birds of prey eating mainly live catch with occasional carrion.  Main prey is small and medium size mammals, birds and reptiles. Both male and femaile are dark brown with white at the base of the tail and gold feathers on the back of their heads, however the femaile is 20% - 25% larger than the male.  Females can range from 10-14 pounds.
