The Colt 1851 Navy or Navy Revolver was originally known as the Colt Revolving Belt Pistol of Naval Caliber. It is a cap and ball revolver that was designed by Samuel Colt between 1847 and 1850. Over 250,000 were made in the U.S. and over 21,000 were made in the Colt London Amory as it was made until 1873, when revolvers using metal cartridges came into use. It usage continued long after its production ended and after the more modern cartridge revolvers arrived on the gun scene.
Colf 1851 Navy is the name used by gun collectors, however the Navy Revolver is the short version of the original name. The cylinder was engraved with a scene of the victory of the Battle of Campeche by the Texas Navy. As this was Samuel Colt's first major success in the gun trade the naval theme of the engraved cylinder was his gesture of appreciation of precious purchases earlier firearms. Even though the revolver had a "Navy" designation, it was mainly purchased and used by civilians and the army.
Famous users of this gun included Wild Bill Hickok, Ned Kelly, Robert E. Lee and Doc Holliday.
