In March, 1862 the Griswold Confederate Pistol Factory was created by turning the Griswold Cotton Gin Company’s plantin Griswold, Georgia into a pistol factory. Until this time the factory made cotton gin machinery which was discontinued and the factory began retooling for the making of weaponry for The Confederate States Army. The first of the Confederate “Colt’s Navy Repeater” were produced in July, 1862. By August the pistols had passed inspection and the Confederate Superintendant of Amories in Macon, Georgia signed a contract purchasing as many as could be produced. The factory produced a total of about 3,500 revolvers and at peak production they produced 5 Colt Navy’s a day.
Commonly known as the “Brass Frame Confederate Colt” to collectors it is the most common of all the Confederate made revolvers. The frame was made from brass due to shortage of steel during the Civil War which gave the pistol a very distinct look. This percussion six-shot cap and ball .36 caliber revolver was made a little over two years until November, 1964 when the 3rd Cavalry burned it down along with several other local factories during General Sherman's March to the Sea.
This reproduction gun is the ideal gift for anyone that likes to collect guns or old west mememorabilia. Excellent for display use on a stand or in a box. Use in the office, study, library or den as a decorative accent.
