The Canebrake Rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus atricaudatus) is the southern subspecies and the Timber Rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus) is the northern subspecies. The Canebrake is pinkish to light tan with dark-brown to black blotches and chevrons, along with a marked stripe down the back and a stripe from the jaw to the eye. Both rattlesnakes have a triangular head and a pit below each eye. The average length of a Canebrake is 4 to 5 feet long. Nickname for the Canebrakes is “Swamp Rattler”, as they can be found quite often around the edges of swamps. Rattlesnakes are a member of the viper family and live throughout North and South America.
